Assam floods: Eight killed, over four lakh affected; Centre approves relief package


With the current wave of flood affecting 4 lakh people and resulting in the death of eight people, Centre has approved Rs 1000 Crore for the flood relief in Assam.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said as road communication with

snapped, the state government has inked MOU with FlyBig to operate flights between Silchar and Guwahati with a fare of Rs 3000 to assist the stuck up people.

Sarma held a meeting with Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K. Sangma and it was assured that there will be movement of essential commodities to Barak valley.

Sarma said, “Vehicles are not moving to Barak valley. We are expecting from Thursday there will be movement of vehicles. Barak valley has a stock of 22,000 MT of rice and there are other commodities available which will meet the requirement for next seven to ten days.”

He added, “There is no need to panic. The Airforce will drop commodities. Army, NDRF and SDRF are engaged in relief operations. The Air Force will bring flood marooned people from Dima Hasao to Jorhat or Silchar.”
