Anurag Kashyap applauds John Abraham’s performance in The Diplomat, calling it one of his best.
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has showered praise on John Abraham’s performance in the upcoming political thriller The Diplomat. Directed by Shivam Nair, the film features John in the role of Indian diplomat JP Singh and is set to release this week.
In an interview with The Hindu, Anurag commended John’s acting in The Diplomat, highlighting a refreshing change in his approach. “I really liked The Diplomat. I told John, ‘After a long time, I am seeing you being a very good actor.’ He is not doing unnecessary action or herogiri in the film. He is solely playing a character. And Shivam Nair has made a really engaging film,” he said.
Anurag and John previously collaborated on the 2007 psychological thriller No Smoking, which, despite failing at the box office, has since gained cult status. During their recent conversation, John expressed his strong desire to make No Smoking 2. While Anurag didn’t rule out the possibility, he emphasized the need for a compelling concept. “John really means it, but I want a subject. Over a period of time, a film achieves a cult following. So it becomes even more scary to meet people’s expectations. I want to go into that zone only if the subject matter is unique,” he explained.
The Diplomat is a gripping political thriller inspired by real-life events, delving into the high-stakes world of diplomacy and international conflict. The film follows Indian diplomat JP Singh (John Abraham), who is stationed in Pakistan when he finds himself at the center of a tense and dangerous mission.
The story revolves around Uzma Ahmed (Sadia Khateeb), an Indian woman who is tricked into traveling to Pakistan under the pretense of love, only to be forced into marriage and held captive. With her life at risk and no way to escape, she desperately seeks help from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.
As JP Singh navigates the delicate corridors of diplomacy, he must outmaneuver political roadblocks, bureaucratic hurdles, and threats from hostile forces to ensure Uzma’s safe return to India. With time running out and tensions mounting, he faces an impossible dilemma—whether to abide by international protocols or risk everything to bring her home.
Directed by Shivam Nair, The Diplomat is a tense and emotional tale of courage, sacrifice, and resilience. With a stellar supporting cast including Prapti Shukla, Jagjeet Sandhu, Ashwath Bhatt, Sharib Hashmi, Kumud Mishra, Ram Gopal Bajaj, and Benjamin Gilani, the film sheds light on the unsung heroes of diplomatic missions and the lengths they go to in protecting their people.
Apart from John Abraham, The Diplomat features an ensemble cast, including Sadia Khateeb, Prapti Shukla, Jagjeet Sandhu, Ashwath Bhatt, Sharib Hashmi, Kumud Mishra, Ram Gopal Bajaj, and Benjamin Gilani.
