Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao discuss Laapataa Ladies at the Supreme Court with CJI DY Chandrachud.

Aamir Khan shares insights on backing Laapataa Ladies and his goal to produce films that support emerging talent, during a chat with CJI DY Chandrachud.

Superstar Aamir Khan and his former wife, filmmaker Kiran Rao, recently engaged in a profound conversation with Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud after a special screening of their acclaimed film Laapataa Ladies at the Supreme Court. The screening, held on Friday, was part of a gender sensitisation program and was attended by several judges from the apex court.

During the conversation, Aamir revealed that his decision to produce Laapataa Ladies stemmed from both “fear and desire.” Reflecting on his career, the actor-producer shared, “During COVID, at the age of 56, I realised this is the last leg of my career. I might have 15 more years of active work left, and I wanted to give back. The industry, society, and country have given me so much. I thought I could do one film a year, but as a producer, I can back multiple stories that I feel strongly about.”

Known for supporting socially relevant films, Aamir emphasised his commitment to nurturing new voices in filmmaking. “Through producing, I can provide a platform for new writers, directors, and everyone involved in the process. Laapataa Ladies is the first step in that direction. I want to promote this kind of talent and hope to produce four to five films a year so that we can see more such movies,” he explained.

Chief Justice Chandrachud also inquired about the inspiration behind the film, to which Kiran Rao responded that it all began with an original script by Biplab Goswami. Aamir had discovered the script during a Screen Writers Association competition in 2020, and they decided to buy the rights. “We infused more humour into the dramatic narrative,” Kiran shared, adding that the journey was long and uncertain due to changes in the cinema industry.

Despite advice to release the film directly on OTT platforms, they chose to debut it in cinemas. “The film has received a lot of love from the audience, and I’m glad we took it to the big screen,” Kiran said.

Laapataa Ladies tells the story of two newlywed brides who accidentally get exchanged during a train ride to their husbands’ homes. The film performed decently at the box office and later found even greater success on Netflix, where it broke several viewership records.
